History
Advance Maryland is the next iteration of Maryland’s ProgressNow state affiliate, which began as Our Maryland in 2017.
For five years, Our Maryland served as a digital communications hub for the progressive movement in Maryland. In that time, they advocated for access to reproductive healthcare, paid sick leave, progressive tax reforms, a $15 minimum wage, transparency in government, and much more.
As 2022 drew to a close, the Our Maryland team knew that our state was entering a new phase in Maryland politics, with new leadership at all levels of state and local government. They knew it was time to meet the moment with a fresh approach to progressive advocacy.
Doubling down on their commitment to serving as a key strategic partner for Maryland’s progressive movement, the Our Maryland board hired two new full-time staff members: Executive Director Alice Wilkerson and Digital & Communications Director Maya Holliday, both formerly of Strong Future Maryland. Together, Alice and Maya brought a combined 20+ years of experience in policy and advocacy, and had worked together to play a key role in passing progressive legislation in Maryland.
Together, the new staff and board formed Advance Maryland, and hit the ground running for the 2023 legislative session. Advance Maryland supported several successful legislative pushes, including expanding the Earned Income and Child Tax Credits, ensuring that gender-affirming care is covered under Maryland Medicaid, and accelerating the adoption of a $15 minimum wage.
Now, our team is continuing to expand our partnerships and secure our vision of a Maryland with thriving, healthy and inclusive communities where all Marylanders have access to opportunity, including safe and affordable housing; economic prosperity; quality healthcare; reliable transportation; a restorative justice system; and a livable future.
